What does the course entail?

  • There is a theory section with knowledge reviews that you need to complete.
  • The practical component is divided into two parts, primary and secondary care.
  • In the primary care component, you will complete 8 skills. These include learning how to handle immediate life-threatening emergencies such as a non-breathing patient, and those with shock and spinal injuries. You will learn how to perform CPR and ‘rescue breaths’ to a non-breathing adult. You will also learn how to evaluate a scene for hazards and monitor a patient’s lifeline. These are all skills that increases an individuals chance of survival before emergency services arrive.
    The secondary care section deals with conditions that are not life threatening.
  • The skills that you will learn here are aimed at helping to ease pain and reduce further injury. You will practice injury and illness assessments as well as bandaging and splinting.
  • Upon completion of the course, you will be an emergency first responder.
